Pontinia

Province: Latina · Region: Lazio · Population: 13,812 · Postal code: 04014

Pontinia has an exact birth date: work began on 19 December 1934 and the town was inaugurated on 18 December 1935, one day short of a year later. It is the third of the five new towns built in the Agro Pontino and the Roman countryside, after Littoria and Sabaudia, and it was conceived as a service centre for the settlers of the surrounding farmland; the design is by the engineer Alfredo Pappalardo, with artistic advice from Oriolo Frezzotti. A design for Pontinia was offered by Le Corbusier too, and was turned down. The territory was cut out of those of Sezze, Terracina and Priverno, and the first inhabitants came mostly from the provinces of Mantua and Ferrara.

The town still bears the marks of the age that made it, but corrected. After the fall of fascism the coat of arms was altered: the two lictorian fasces were taken off the shield, along with the ribbon that formed Mussolini's M, and the chief was retouched; the present arms date from 1953, and the gonfalon, black in 1935, is now blue. The language tells the same story: Pontinia has no dialect of its own, because its people brought theirs from home, and in the space of some seventy years the accents of Mantua and Ferrara have given way to a Roman inflection.
