The town was built in a little more than two hundred and fifty days: first stone on 5 August 1933, inauguration on 15 April 1934. The plan was won in competition by Luigi Piccinato's group with Cancellotti, Montuori and Scalpelli, and it is one of the manifestos of Italian rationalism: the civic tower, the town hall, the church of the Annunziata.
The first inhabitants came from the Veneto and Friuli, sent to farm the holdings of the drained Agro Pontino. Around them, though, the landscape is far older: the dunes, the forest, the three coastal lakes and Domitian's villa, forty-five hectares along the shore of Lake Paola. Since 1934 all of this is the Circeo national park; there are 18,812 residents.
