The patron of Amatrice is Santa Maria di Filetta, celebrated on the Sunday after Ascension in the Santuario della Madonna di Filetta, built in 1472 on the spot where the shepherdess Chiarina Valente saw a luminous cameo fall from the sky, in which she recognized the image of the Madonna. Every year a procession unites all the people of the Amatrice area from the main town, for Mass and the traditional picnic on the surrounding meadows. The shrine, which holds apse frescoes by Pierpalma da Fermo from 1480, did not collapse but was heavily damaged by the 2016 earthquakes.
Among the town's contemporary popular events is also the Palio dei Somari-Sindaci, created in 2003 to playfully recall the traditional role of the donkey in the farming economy. The town also holds the Church of Sant'Agostino and the Church of San Francesco.
