Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Ascrea celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the municipal territory preserves the ruins of the Chiesa di San Pietro.
The villages around here are old; this one is not. Ascrea was born late, between the eleventh and the fourteenth century, and the reason is that two nearby villages, Bulgaretta south of the Turano and Mirandella to the north, were being abandoned: the people moved and set this one up. The first mention is from 1392, as a possession of the Mareri. The village stands halfway up a spur of rock, and beside it runs the gorge of the Obito, a deep cleft through which a stream has opened a way across the ridge of Monte Navegna.
The municipal territory is not a single piece: there are two exclaves, two portions detached from the rest, and in the northern one lie two of the comune's own hamlets. The boundaries have moved too: in 1968 Ascrea gave up the hamlet of Rigatti to the neighbouring comune of Varco Sabino. As for the economy, the figures are what they are: at the last census the businesses in the territory numbered fourteen, with nineteen employees in all.
