Collegiove

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 169 · Postal code: 02020

The name says Collis Iovis, the hill of Jupiter: where the village now stands there was, scholars believe, a Roman temple to Jupiter, and the name first appears in 1252 in a register of the churches of the diocese of Rieti. Of that temple, or of something like it, a piece remains: in the church of Santa Maria a great Roman marble basin, found at Colle Santo, serves as the holy water stoup.

The village lies inside the reserve of Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia, beech and chestnut woods where golden eagles, wolves and wildcats live; on Monte Cervia opens a system of karst caves still unexplored. And in a village this small, in 2015, nearly a third of the residents were foreign citizens.
