Feast of Maria Santissima della Croce
📅 Every year, on 10 September
On 10 September Belmonte in Sabina, a municipality of 649 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, celebrates its patroness Maria Santissima della Croce.
How many people there were in the castrum Belmontis at the beginning of the fourteenth century is known from salt: from its consumption two hundred and fifty souls are reckoned. In 1483 the tenant farmers rebelled against their feudal lord Gabriele Cesarini and called Rieti to help; the siege that followed was driven off, and in 1501 Cesarini even obtained the protection of the Borgia pope.
Dionysius of Halicarnassus writes that Palatium, a city of the Aborigines, stood in these parts, and that in his own day it was still inhabited by Romans: the site has been located only recently, and at Terze Ville a polygonal wall remains, twenty metres long and four high. At the Guardiola there was a menhir, but it rolled down the valley. The little church of Sant'Elena is built on top of a Roman shrine.
