Longone Sabino

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 583 · Postal code: 02020

A former post office has become a cinema with twelve seats, «U Cinemittu», the little cinema: the smallest in Italy. The actor Luca Marinelli wanted it for the village his mother comes from. The rest of the village, on the other hand, is a medieval administrative machine still standing.

Longone was the capital of the castles of the abbey of San Salvatore Maggiore, and in 1506 Pope Julius II placed a governor here. One can still make out the square of the Government, the courthouse, the seat of the bargello and his constables, the prisons, the oven for bread sold at a fixed price, the grain stores and, between the castle's two gates, the customs post. On the second gate is the date 1668.
