Concerviano

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 311 · Postal code: 02020

Concerviano stands on a hill above the Salto valley, and that is exactly where the name comes from: Collis Cerviani, the hill of the estate of one Cervius. For centuries the village belonged to no lay lord but to the abbey of San Salvatore Maggiore, the Benedictine monastery founded in 735 by monks from Farfa, which lies in the hamlet of Pratoianni: Concerviano was one of the castles of the abbatial lordship and followed its fate until the Napoleonic reforms broke that government up. The comune also owns an exclave, Cenciara, wedged between the territories of Longone Sabino and Rieti.

The village keeps its medieval plan inside the rectangular walls, with two towers, one of them square with Guelph battlements, arrow slits and a hoarding. But what marked this place most is the river below it: until 17 March 1861 the Salto was the border between the Papal State and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and living on a border meant customs posts, smuggling and mistrust. Concerviano became a comune in its own right in 1853, and at that time it counted two hundred and sixty-one inhabitants in forty-five families occupying forty-four houses.
