Borgo Velino

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 990 · Postal code: 02010

In the sixteenth century the fief belonged to Margherita d'Austria, who taxed it heavily and had a statute written for it alone, the Capitoli: a code of how the people of Borghetto were to behave towards the authorities and towards one another. The village was called Borghetto until 1863; its old arms carried the three hills of the Farnese and the lily of the Medici, with the words «Insignia Fidelis Burghetti».

The village is laid out on two parallel streets with a cross-axis called the street of the Eight Corners, inside walls with rounded angles and a great gate-tower: the plan of an Angevin new town. Until 1927 this was Abruzzo, in the province of L'Aquila; in 1928 the comune was abolished and joined to Antrodoco, and came back only in 1957.
