Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Petrella Salto, a municipality of 1,212 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
The name comes from petra, the stony ground. In the fortress on top, in 1598, one of the most famous crimes of the sixteenth century took place: the murder of count Francesco Cenci, arranged by his daughter Beatrice. The village has been in Lazio only since 1927: for more than six centuries it was Abruzzo, in the district of Cittaducale.
Two women from here left their mark. Filippa Mareri, born in the castle of Borgo San Pietro, ran from a family that refused her the convent and lived three years in a cave above Piagge, until in 1228 her brothers gave her the castle and she brought her companions there, under the rule Francis had given to Clare. Cleonice Tomassetti, a schoolteacher who had moved to Milan and became a partisan courier, was the only woman among the forty-three shot at Fondotoce in 1944.
