This is a Lazio comune that was Abruzzese for centuries: until 1927 it belonged to the province of L'Aquila, and from the thirteenth century to the unification of Italy it was part of the Justiciarate of Abruzzo. It first appears in 943, when the abbey of Farfa bought land «in the place called Micilianus»; later it was the fief of a Benedictine abbey, until in 1229 Frederick II seized the abbey's territories.
In the village museum there are two objects that tell what life was like up here. The abberrocchio is a very poor wine press: a beam fixed to the cellar wall, with a great stone at its end that is raised and let fall to crush the grape skins. And the tregge are sledges pulled by oxen, made in different shapes according to whether they carried stones, manure or the harvest.
