Collalto Sabino

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 440 · Postal code: 02022

The castle of Collalto ruined one family after another. In 1564 Cristoforo Savelli, with his creditors at his heels, sold it to his father-in-law Roberto Strozzi, son of a Florentine banker; the Strozzi passed it to the Soderini, who really set to work on it, adapting it against firearms and enlarging the residential part for a wedding; then the debts caught up with them too, and in 1641 Nicola Soderini had to put it up for auction. Cardinal Francesco Barberini, the pope's nephew, bought it for a hundred and two thousand scudi and made it his summer residence: ever since, the crown on the municipal arms carries three gold bees, which are the Barberini's.

The village stands on the border between what was the Papal State and the kingdom of Naples, and for centuries that was its fate. Frederick II passed through on his way up to Rieti, and in those years Collalto even held the right to mint coin; the walls went up after the battles of Benevento and Tagliacozzo, when the village controlled the Turano valley. On 13 February 1861, the very day Francis II of Bourbon surrendered at Gaeta, the troops of general Saverio Luvarà occupied Collalto: the position was easy to defend and useful for organising resistance against the Piedmontese.
