Feast of Saint Sebastian
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Nespolo, a small municipality of 274 inhabitants, celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The village is made of two hills, and for centuries they were two different things: on one side the Colle di qua, the hill on this side, on the other the Colle di là, each grown probably around one strong family. The church of San Sebastiano was built on the high ground between them, founded in 1357 and made new again in 1521, and the sources credit it with exactly that role: holding the two halves of the village together. The upper part is still called Castelluccio, and in all likelihood there really was a small castle there.
About the name there are two very distant hypotheses: the most accepted derives it from the medlar tree; another from the Greek Nea Poli, new city. It first appears in 1024, in a document of the abbey of Farfa, where it is called Aquam Nespoli. Then there is the matter of the province, which is almost comic: after the unification of Italy Nespolo was placed in the district of Rieti but inside the province of Perugia, that is in Umbria; in 1923 it passed to the province of Rome; and in 1927 it returned to the Sabina, in Lazio.
