Polino

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 246 · Postal code: 05030

Polino had a mint, and it struck coins with gold taken from the mine nearby: one of those coins, with the relief of Pope Clement XIII, is kept in the Vatican. The mine can be visited today.

The village stands at 836 metres, under Monte Petano, and it has had marble, iron and silver, all of it now worked out. Above sits the sixteenth-century fortress with its cylindrical bastions; on the square at the entrance, a seventeenth-century fountain built for marchese Castelli, perpetual governor of Polino. It is the least populous comune in the province of Terni: 246 residents. Americo Matteucci was its mayor for forty-seven years.
