Arrone

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,839 · Postal code: 05031

At the end of the ninth century a Roman noble called Arrone took a rock spur above the Valnerina and built a castle on it: first in timber, then in stone. The town carries his name.

His descendants lost land and power piece by piece to Spoleto, to which Arrone submitted in 1229. Then, in 1315, the local men bought the whole territory back from the old lords, and in 1347 gave themselves a comune. In 1527 the Landsknechts sacked it, in 1799 the French. Today the 2,839 residents live up inside the castle walls, with the Nera running below.
