Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle
📅 Every year, on 30 November
On 30 November Pescorocchiano celebrates its patron Saint Andrew the Apostle; the municipal territory is linked to the ancient Italic Res Publica Aequiculorum.
In this territory stood Nersae, the town of the Aequicoli that became a Roman municipium. Its forum has been located outside Civitella, by a farmhouse that was built on top of its walls: out of the ground came altars, marble columns and capitals, cisterns lined with cocciopesto and many inscriptions — and those inscriptions are today built into the walls of the houses, between Nesce and Pescorocchiano. One of them records the repairs to public buildings ordered by the emperor Hadrian; others speak of repairs to the theatre and of the shows that were put on in it.
The sanctuary of Nersae stood on the hill of Civitella, on two terraces; the lower one is held up by a great wall of polygonal blocks from the middle of the second century before Christ, which survives for some ninety metres. On the cell of the temple a church was built in the Middle Ages, and in the eighteen hundreds that church became the chapel of the cemetery: three uses, one single place. Beside it a votive deposit was found with veiled heads of offerers and terracotta ex-votos — eyes, limbs, sexual organs — left there to ask for a healing. Older still is the cave of val de' Varri, lived in without a break from the Copper Age to the middle Bronze Age. The village itself came later, on a rock above the Salto: the name says so, from pesculum, a place set high. The parish church is first named in 1153, the castle in 1161. And in 1940 the river was dammed, and the lake covered the bottom of the valley.
