It is the least populous comune in Lazio and one of the smallest in Italy, and yet it founded another village. In 1578 some families from Marcetelli accepted the invitation of Cardinal Flavio Orsini to move to one of his family's estates, further west: the village they built there is called Monteflavio, after the cardinal, and it still exists.
Its administrative belonging has been mobile too: from 1863 the comune was in the district of Rieti but inside the Umbrian province of Perugia, in 1923 it passed to the province of Rome and to Lazio, and only in 1927 to the new province of Rieti. In the old centre there is still the bottega del Cerchiaro, the hooper's workshop, where barrels, vats and tubs are made from chestnut wood.
