The village took the side of Pope Nicholas II against the antipope Benedict X, and the pope repaid it with privileges: since then the square tower at the top, built before the year one thousand, bears his name. It is what remains of the three rings of walls that defended the village; on the coat of arms the castle is flanked by two red letters, R and A.
In the territory lies the Revotano, a sinkhole two hundred and fifty metres wide: local people say that the earlier village sank into it. In the Gothic church of Santa Caterina, in 1430, Pietro Coleberti painted eight scenes from the life of Catherine of Alexandria.
