Feast of Santa Giulia
📅 Every year, on the third Sunday of August
On the third Sunday of August Salisano, a municipality of 558 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, celebrates its patroness Santa Giulia.
The name of Salisano is a praedial formation, the kind the Romans made from the owner's name plus the suffix -anus: except that here we do not know the owner, the name has been lost and the suffix has stayed. The village is born in the first half of the eleventh century, and from its first feudal lords, the Baronisci, it passed early to the abbey of Farfa, whose fortunes it then followed until the eighteenth century. Its coat of arms shows three towers resting on a keep, the middle one taller and broader than the others.
Today the water of Rome passes through Salisano. Here the pipes coming down from the Peschiera springs and from the Capore springs converge, the Peschiera-Capore system, the capital's main aqueduct and one of the largest in the world; before setting off again for the city, the water turns the turbines of the hydroelectric plant. It is the only power station in Italy that runs on drinking water: the same water that is later drunk in Rome.
