Casperia

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,231 · Postal code: 02041

Until 1947 the village was called Aspra Sabina. It took its new name from Casperia, the Sabine town Virgil lists in the seventh book of the Aeneid, which the Renaissance had placed here to ennoble the origins of the place; but the council resolution also gives the practical reason: letters ended up in Aspra near Bagheria, in Sicily, or in Ascrea, close by.

Aspra behaved like a small state. In 1285 it divided the land among the families of the village with one clause: the shares of houses that died out would come back to the comune. With neighbouring Caprignano it was real war: having bought the castle, the men of Aspra stormed it and in 1307 levelled it, and the lawsuit that followed condemned them heavily.
