Montasola

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 403 · Postal code: 02040

Among the fragments of Roman inscriptions found here are some with dedications to Isis, Serapis and Harpocrates: Egyptian gods, which reached as far as the Sabine mountains along with a country villa the documents call Curtis de Lauri. Just outside the village stands the church of Santa Maria Murella, and the name says how it was built: with stones taken from the old Roman walls, those of the town of Laurum. In 817 pope Stephen IV confirmed this territory to the monks of Farfa, who had put its farming back on its feet, and the confirmation was repeated by the emperors Lothair and Louis.

Today's village was born in 1191, when pope Celestine III and the emperor Henry VI reorganised the area and the castrum of Montasola was founded: the date can be read in an inscription on the church of San Pietro, built nine years later. In the thirteen hundreds Montasola rebelled against the pope and was condemned as a «banished land». Then began a round that seems never to end: after the unification of Italy it was in the province of Perugia, in 1923 it passed to Rome, in 1927 to Rieti, in 1928 it was abolished and merged into Cottanello, and it became a municipality again only in 1946.
