Feast of Saint Stephen
📅 Every year, on 3 August
On 3 August Selci, a municipality of 1,106 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, celebrates its patron Saint Stephen (santo Stefano).
The name comes from the road: the Roman way that ran nearby was paved with flint slabs, selci, and the village took its name from them. Those who made it came down from Forum Novum, the Roman town in the valley, abandoned after the raids of barbarians and Saracens: the people climbed the hill and fortified themselves. Of the castle a square tower and pieces of wall remain.
The fief belonged to the Orsini until 1596, then to the Cesi and finally to the Vaini princes; but from 1722 to 1860 Selci had no lord at all: the Apostolic Chamber administered it directly. Meanwhile the olives grew, and here they are centuries old and make the village a city of oil; and the porchetta selciana remains, a traditional product of Lazio.
