In 1347 the village took the side of Cola di Rienzo against the government of the Church, and it did not change its mind: it held out against the forces of the Holy See until the spring of 1357, when, the Ghibellines having capitulated, the rector of Sabina had the castle walls thrown down and every house of those who had backed the revolt demolished. Eleven years later a pope handed Stimigliano to the Orsini, who built their palace here and, at the beginning of the fifteen hundreds, wrote the legislative code of the village: one of the best preserved artefacts of its age in matters of law.

The name comes from a Roman family: a villa of the first or second century seems to have belonged to the gens Septimia, and the place was the septimilianus, the property of the Septimii. At the beginning of the sixth century Galla, daughter of that Symmachus who advised Theodoric king of the Goths, had a basilica built on the hill in honour of San Valentino. Below, the Tiber makes a loop that everyone here calls «the flask»; and until the last century people went down to Rome by boat, on that river. Then the station came, and around the station grew Stimigliano scalo, full of people who worked in the city. One more record: Costante Menichelli was mayor here for thirty-four years without a break, from 1970 to 2004, one of the longest-serving in Italy.
