Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Tarano, a municipality of 1,431 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, celebrates its patron Saint George, to whom one of the town's churches is dedicated.
The old centre of Tarano stands at 234 metres, on a river terrace left by the Tiber basin, with the Campana torrent on one side and a tributary ditch on the other: from that comes, in all likelihood, the name Interamnia, between two waters, which over the centuries became Tarano. The via Campana, the old country road, took the village straight down to the Tiber, past Cicignano and Foglia. Between 1347 and 1352 the people of Tarano joined the risings of Cola di Rienzo, which claimed free communes against the barons' abuses.
The Marsica earthquake of 1915 damaged the village, and for a while those left homeless were put in wooden huts; where the huts stood two settlements later grew, and they are still called by that name: San Giorgio, the Baracche di Tarano, and Borgonuovo, the Baracche di San Polo. On 5 June 1944, during the German retreat, Antonio Peloni, a farmer from Fianello, was forced to move livestock with the traja, the wooden sledge drawn by animals: he was killed with his beasts at the ford of the Campana, on the Costa dei Zoppi road that comes down from Cicignano. The comune received its arms only in 2020.
