Near the church of San Pietro ad Centomuros stand the remains of a Roman villa which the inscriptions found on the spot assign to Agrippa, the general of Augustus. Another villa stood by the cemetery of Fianello: digging for the road they turned up a silenus, a dancing maenad, a head of Aeschylus, and all of it ended in the storerooms of the Museo nazionale romano. The villas themselves were quarried for stone for centuries.

In April 1944, at the hermitage of San Benedetto on the top of the mountain, the Germans shot eight American prisoners. They had escaped from a cattle wagon of a train bound for Germany which American aviation had bombed by mistake while looking for a bridge, and the partisans of the Vacone band were escorting them towards their comrades.
