Toffia

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,002 · Postal code: 02039

For centuries Toffia was two villages. The lower part belonged to the Orsini, who built there the palace that is now the town hall; the upper part, where Santa Maria Nova was later raised, belonged to the Colonna: two portions wholly separate and independent of each other. The name may come from the tufa, tophium, the hard rock of the spur the village is planted on.

The church of San Lorenzo was already there in the tenth century, and after the Saracen raids it was made a cathedral: seat of the bishop of Foronovo and second see of the Sabina. At the foot of the hill, at Cerreto, stood a Bronze Age settlement now identified with Suna, city of the Aborigines: and the forty stadia Dionysius of Halicarnassus counts from Suna to Suesbula still come out right, a little over seven kilometres.
