Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Castelnuovo di Farfa celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the town hosts the Museo dell'Olio della Sabina.
Below the village lies the Grotta Scura, and people went into it to leave offerings: whole pots, set down in chambers hard to reach, and the traces of hearths. The oldest fragments are of the Bronze Age, but from the same branch have come Roman lamps and coins as well. It is among the oldest places of worship in the Sabina, and it is identified with the sanctuary of Mars that Dionysius of Halicarnassus placed near Suna, today's Toffia.
Between 1940 and 1943 the fascist state sent twenty-one Jewish refugees here in forced residence: after San Donato Val di Comino it was the comune in Lazio with the largest such group. After the eighth of September almost all of them managed to save themselves. One only, who had left the village, was caught in the province of Macerata at the end of November and taken to his death at Auschwitz in April 1944.
