When the Chigi bought the fief, in 1662, they called Gian Lorenzo Bernini in to remake the town: the piazza di Corte with its two fountains is his, so is the round church of the Assunta, so is the palace facing it. It is one of the few places where a whole Baroque set has come down to us intact.
Long before, Aricia was one of the oldest cities of Latium and led the Latin League against Rome; in its territory, which then reached Lake Nemi, stood Diana's sacred wood, with that priest — the rex nemorensis — who held office until somebody killed him. Today the town, 18,311 residents, is known above all for its porchetta.
