Marino

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 38,245 · Postal code: 00047

Once a year in Marino, the fountains run with wine: it has happened since 1925 at the Grape Festival — Italy's oldest — when the Fountain of the Four Moors pours Castelli white to the crowd. The feast celebrates the 1571 victory of Lepanto, which counted Marcantonio Colonna, lord of Marino, among its commanders.

The rest of the year the town lives on vineyards and fraschette, the no-frills taverns where wine keeps company with porchetta and chatter. The Baroque centre, the museum in the Mithraic temple and the view over Lake Albano complete the Castelli portrait.
