Mandela

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 897 · Postal code: 00020

In the Middle Ages the village was called Cantalupo Bardella, and under that name pope Celestine III gave it in fief to the Orsini. But Horace had named it Pagus Mandela, and after 1870 the village took back the old name, the one the poet had given it.

In the middle of the nineteenth century the marchioness Julie Charlotte Bonaparte, of the family of Joseph, Napoleon's brother and king of Naples and then of Spain, kept a literary salon here with painters and men of letters. Her husband, meanwhile, brought technicians down from the north to put the farmland right: among them the Milanese Pio Gaslini, an agronomist, who was also mayor of the village from 1891 to 1894.
