Until 1882 the village was called Scarpa, and the name did not come from the shoe but from the Latin for «cut», «sharp»: the place is steep. Below, where the via Valeria divided in two, the Romans had a posting station, ad Lamnas; on the same spot, centuries later, stood two inns, the one of the Spiaggia and the one of the Ferrata.

In 1166 a Theodino of Scarpa was elected abbot of Montecassino. And in December 1526, Guicciardini relates in his Istoria d'Italia, Ascanio Colonna came this way with two thousand foot and three hundred horse and tried to take the castle: he did not manage it. The fief belonged to the Orsini, who passed it from hand to hand among themselves for centuries.
