Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Monteflavio, a municipality of 1,399 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Rome, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
Monteflavio was born of a contract, and its founders did not keep to it all the way. In 1570 some inhabitants of Marcetelli, who in the valleys of the Turano and the Salto were paying the Mareri unbearable taxes, accepted the invitation of cardinal Flavio Orsini to move to the Montefalco estate, in exchange for land to till and to graze and for tax relief. The foundation was sealed by a Capitolato, a real contract, which the comune still keeps: it laid down how much the people would pay the Orsini and how the village was to be made. The Orsini wanted it in scattered farmsteads, with gardens and yards; the newcomers built it compact instead, with parallel streets cut by alleys. The Via larga joined the two quarters still called Pétellaterra and Castellittu, and led from the old cemetery church of San Martino up to the parish church of the Assunta, on the square, at the highest point.
The church was finished in 1602 and the fountain in 1626, and on both is carved the five-petalled rose of the Orsini. On 18 August 1644 the village passed to the Barberini, and from Marcetelli came a second wave of people: with them grew the shepherding and the woodwork, which here means vats, torches, staves and above all hoops for barrels. At that trade the people of Marcetelli were masters, and that is why those of Monteflavio are still called cerchiari, hoop-makers. On the arms there is an oak planted on the middle peak of a three-peaked mountain; and on the second Sunday of October, in the square and along the streets, they eat polenta with the new wine.
