Percile

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 277 · Postal code: 00020

On the walls of the Gallery of Maps, in the Vatican, the village's old name is still there. Those maps were painted between 1580 and 1585, and on one of the two devoted to Lazio Percile is written Porcile: probably because the name comes from the Roman gens Porcia. From that age there also survives a marble stele dedicated to a girl of about seven, which commemorates several local figures as well.

The coat of arms, granted in 2001, is that of the Orsini family, but with three things changed: the rose has taken green leaves and a golden centre, the eel that wound through it has become a snake, and the bands have turned into two black chains. The village lies in the Monti Lucretili, and within its territory are two small lakes they call the Lagustelli. After the battle of Mentana some of Garibaldi's men came to hide up here, and a few streets in the village still bear their names.
