Cerreto Laziale

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,192 · Postal code: 00020

We know when Cerreto was born, and two charters say it. In 1015 a document gives the monks of Subiaco the mount of Cerreto so that they may build a castle there: so the castle was not there. In the privilege of Leo IX of 1051 the same mount is given with the castle standing on it.

In 1592 the brigands of Marco Sciarra besieged the village, and the people shut themselves in the fortress. Rome did not answer the call for help; the neighbouring villages did. On the night between the twenty-fourth and the twenty-fifth of April the Cerretani tied a pitch-soaked rag to a cat's tail, set it alight and threw it into the haylofts where the brigands were sleeping: the flames were the agreed signal. The cat still gives the local feast its name.

Feast of Saint Sebastian

📅 Every year, on 20 January

On 20 January Cerreto Laziale celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian; the town's most important feast, however, is that of the Madonna delle Grazie, with the Tappeto Artistico made of coloured salt.
