Feast of Saint Agnes Segni
📅 Every year, on 20 April
On 20 April Proceno celebrates its patroness Saint Agnes Segni; on 5 August, for Our Lady of the Snows, a great fair sanctioned by a Brief of Pope Leo X in 1519 was held.
In 1633 Galileo, on his way to Rome for the trial, had to stop in quarantine at Centeno: he came from Florence, where the plague was, and that was the border between the grand duchy and the Papal State. On the farmhouse where he stayed there is a plaque. Proceno is the northernmost comune of Lazio, and the border is still there.
In 1283 the community asked that a monastery be opened here, and to lead it they sent a girl of fifteen: it was Agnes of Montepulciano, who stayed in Proceno twenty-three years and has remained its patron saint. The church that bears her name, finished in 1880, is round, with a skylight in the middle; the doorway comes from the ducal hall of the Sforza palace.
