Feast of the Holy Cross
📅 Every year, on 14 September
On 14 September Beverino celebrates the Holy Cross; one of the village's churches bears the same title.
The name speaks of water. It may come from the Latin for drinking, marking the places where flocks were watered or where springs are plentiful; another theory traces it instead to Bebronna, a deity of the ancient Ligurians. The municipality is a scattered one: the town hall stands at Padivarma, while the historic core, Beverino Castello, lies higher up at 215 metres, where the Graveglia joins the Vara.
In 1247 Beverino made itself a free commune and in 1274 it entered the Republic of Genoa, keeping its own statutes all the same. At Bracelli the old church of San Maurizio still stands, in its first form dating to the seventh century: inside you can see what is left of the original frescoes, but it is closed because it is unsafe. The population is 2,403.
