Rocchetta di Vara

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 785 · Postal code: 19020

On 22 June 1500 a notarial deed divided the territory between two Malaspina brothers: Rocchetta went to Tommaso, Suvero to Giovanni. From that day the two halves of the valley had two masters, but the same family, right up to Napoleon.

The castle of Suvero was built by the Malaspina in the fourteenth century; in 1549 marquis Rinaldo found it four hundred years old and had it enlarged. Abandoned after 1797, it has been restored and is now a private house. In the same village pre-Roman finds have come to light, now in the archaeological museum of La Spezia. The population is 785.

Saint Justine, patroness of a fief split between two Malaspina brothers

📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of September

Rocchetta di Vara celebrates Saint Justine on the last Sunday of September; her 16th-century church stands on the foundations of the old chapel of San Pantaleone, while the nearby castle of Suvero, built by the Malaspina in the 14th century, was split in 1500 between the brothers Tommaso and Giovanni.
