Pignone

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 599 · Postal code: 19020

In February 1312 the emperor Henry VII of Luxembourg stopped at Pignone with cardinal Luca Fieschi and an escort of nearly fifteen hundred soldiers, and went to visit the pieve. The village stood at the crossing of two Roman roads, one towards Sestri Levante and one towards Velleia, in the Piacenza Apennines.

Under the old loggia, in 1465, the inhabitants swore loyalty to Francesco Sforza, duke of Milan; the one you see today is a seventeenth-century rebuilding, a little way off. The medieval bridge, one of the village's symbols, came down instead on 25 October 2011 in the flood of the stream. The population is 599.
