Brugnato

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,266 · Postal code: 19020

For almost seven centuries Brugnato had a bishop of its own: from 1133, when Innocent II made it an episcopal see, until 1820, when the diocese was merged with those of Luni and Sarzana. A village of little more than a thousand people, with its own cathedral.

The name comes from the plum tree — brigne in dialect — and it is a plum tree that stands on the coat of arms. With the local lords it ended badly for the lords: on 23 April 1530 a popular rising drove the Malaspina out of Brugnato for good. The population is 1,266.
