Follo

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 6,337 · Postal code: 19020

The Ligurians here were all deported. In the second century BC the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, the man of the via Aemilia, fought the local people at length and ended by moving them en masse to the province of Benevento.

The name may come from the Latin fullare, to press, grapes or cloth, like Follonica; or from fola, a hunting reserve, and indeed this territory was a hunting ground of some of the Este. Follo appears in a document of 1197. Earlier still, in 238 BC, the Ligurian Briniati had opposed the Roman advance; the Apuani submitted only in 14 BC. There are 6,337 residents.
