Santo Stefano di Magra

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 8,790 · Postal code: 19037

Some of those who passed through here wrote it down. Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury kept a diary of his journey to Rome around 990; the Icelandic abbot Nikulas of Munkaþverá told his own, all the way from Iceland, around 1151. Santo Stefano was a stop on the via Francigena.

The reason was the market: in Otto II's diploma of 981 the town appears as mercatum in plebe Sancti Stephani, and in 1185 Frederick Barbarossa granted it market, ban, justice and fishing rights. A documented community, though, exists only from 12 May 1202, when the people, the bishop and the Malaspina swore peace. There are 8,790 residents.
