Vezzano Ligure

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 7,391 · Postal code: 19020

The name may come from two opposite directions. From Vectius, a Roman nobleman of a Sabine family who had holdings here; or from the Ligurian Vect-iani, «peak of Janus», and in that case it would be older than the Roman conquest and than the colony of Luni itself.

Livy, telling of the war against the Apuani, describes the country around the Magra as full of castra and fortifications, and Vezzano probably grew out of one of those posts, on the pass linking the gulf of La Spezia to the valley. On the hill opposite is Bolano, and the two names hold together: Vettius and Bolanus were two Roman families that ended up merging. There are 7,391 residents.
