Two facing hills, two Roman families. Bolano comes from the cognomen Bolanus, the one Cicero recommends in a letter and the one Horace finds under his feet on the Via Sacra: «O te Bolane cerebri felicem», lucky you, Bolanus, with that hot head of yours.
On the hill opposite is Vezzano Ligure, which takes its name from the cognomen Vettius. The two families were separate at first, then they merged: Tacitus writes «Praeerat tunc Britanniae Vettius Bolanus», at that time Vettius Bolanus had the command in Britain. The place names of the two towns still keep that meeting. There are 7,759 residents.

Bolano celebrates Saint Joseph on 19 March; its parish church, an old pieve in the old village, was first named in 1149 in a bull of Pope Eugenius III among the thirty-three pievi of Luni, while in the hamlet of Ceparana stands the Giustiniani castle.
