The patron of Riomaggiore is Saint John the Baptist and his day falls on 24 June. The church dedicated to him stands high above the village, over the vertical houses that drop towards the harbour.
It is the villagers' own feast, in a place that in summer belongs mostly to those passing through: 24 June is one of the few days when the village looks at itself.
