Vernazza

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 941 · Postal code: 19018

Vernazza is the only natural harbour of the Cinque Terre, and Genoa saw it at once: it built a fortified port for its galleys there and a yard to repair them, the only one of the five villages to have it. In 1209 eighty-eight heads of family swore loyalty to the Republic.

The rest was done by the dry-stone walls that hold up the vines: in the Cinque Terre, laid end to end, they are reckoned to run for more than seven thousand kilometres. On 25 October 2011 water and mud came down from those same terraces and filled the old town and the station. The population is 941.

Saint Margaret of Antioch, patroness of the Cinque Terre

📅 Every year, on 20 July

Vernazza celebrates Saint Margaret of Antioch on 20 July; the parish church dedicated to her, begun in 1318 in Antelami style, has its altar facing east and an octagonal tower set on the apse.
