The name is a double one and both halves tell you something. Sesta is said to come from sexta ab urbe lapidem, the village at the sixth milestone from Brugnato; Godano, according to some, is the dialect contraction of Wotàn, that is the god Odin.
With the Malaspina it ended badly: the friction with the population went on for centuries and in 1524 marquis Alessandro Malaspina was killed in the forest of Malconsiglio, above Godano. The municipality lies in the middle val di Vara, under monte Gottero, which at 1,639 metres is the highest in the province. The population is 1,452.
