Carro

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 580 · Postal code: 19012

Two big names come from this village of five hundred souls. Niccolò Paganini's parents were from Carro, and every summer a Paganini festival is held here to which the winner of the Premio Paganini of Genoa is always invited; in the village stands a monument to the violinist, of 1935.

In the hamlet of Cerreta, on the other hand, saint Antonio Maria Gianelli was born, and beside the house where he came into the world stands the sanctuary. The village, which made itself a free commune in 1229, sat on the road that climbed from the Val di Vara towards Piacenza: which is why Genoa made it a podesteria. The population is 580.
