Carrodano

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 521 · Postal code: 19020

Carrodano's coat of arms reads like a description of the place: the mountain is monte San Nicolao, the blue bar is the Malacqua stream, the ears of corn are the cereals that were grown here and the red ground is the colour of the red marble of Levanto, which was quarried nearby.

On the mountain, above Carrodano Superiore, stand the ruins of the hospice of San Nicolao, where those crossing the pass would stop. The village's name is said to come from carrodonum, a camp of wagons: but that is a guess, because what is known for certain here begins with the Middle Ages. The population is 521.
