In 1827, in the hamlet of Novà, a statue-stele came to light: one of those carved monoliths that mark prehistory in the Lunigiana. The village's name, on the other hand, is said to come from the dialect Zignègu, one who lives near the water; and water there is here, between the Casseruola, the Mangia and the Scannabecco.

Above the hamlet of Torpiana, in April 1945, twenty-three militiamen of the National Republican Guard, taken prisoner after the surrender of the garrison of Borghetto di Vara, were marched up there on foot and shot in front of a cave, where the bodies were hidden. An investigation in the two thousands established that the executions had been preceded by torture. The population is 524.
