Levanto

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 5,509 · Postal code: 19015

The bell tower of the pieve of Ceula, at the beginning of the ninth century, did not only call people to mass: it served as a watchtower against the raids of the Saracen marauders who came in from the sea. The pieve is today's parish church of San Siro at Montale.

Levanto had a river port on the Cantarana, from which the Via dei Monti set off for Pontremoli and the Lunigiana: pilgrims and merchants. And it had salt pans: the salt left the Borgo along the road that carries its name. The name Levanto appears for the first time in a diploma of Frederick Barbarossa of 1164, confirming the fief to the Malaspina. There are 5,509 residents.

Saint Andrew and the two-tone Gothic façade

📅 Every year, on 30 November
